Monkland Village Duplex

Monkland Village - Le Village Monkland, Monkland Avenue, Avenue de Monkland

History:
Monkland Village refers to Monkland Avenue between the Autoroute Decarie Expressway (15 North and South) and Grand Boulevard.   The village gets its name from James Monk, who had built a residence named the “Monklands” in the area now known as NDG (Notre-Dame-de-Grace).

Historical notes:

  • The Monklands residence was built in 1804
  • James Monk was the Attorney General of “Lower Canada”
  • Monk was Chief justice from 1804-1824
  • The Monklands residence and estate were willed to Elizabeth Ann Monk, his niece
  • The building was then used as the Governor General’s home and a country hotel from 1824-1854
  • In 1854 Villa Maria (a girl’s boarding school) was opened in the residence when Congregation Notre Dame de Grace bought the Monklands estate.
  • NDG was originally the location of “Decarie Farms” whose Water Melon crop was sold throughout the developed potions of Canada and the United States.

The present:

Monkland Village derives its name from the fact that it is both a commercial and residential district.  Monkland Avenue acts as the main artery for Restaurants, Sidewalk Cafes, Boutiques and other shops ranging from the holistic to the eclectic.  This trendy street is the perfect place to settle down due to its range of broad Avenues bordered with old growth trees.  Charming Co-props, duplexes, condos, and older styles houses from the 1910s - 1930s are abundant in this area.  “Le Village Monkland” as it is known by those living within its confines, has a very European flavor due to its blend of French and Anglo residents and shops.

There are an abundance of Private/public schools including Villa Maria and Concordia University Loyola Campus as well as a wealth of transportation including the Villa Maria metro/subway station (4331, Decarie Boul.) which is on the “Orange Line”.

Streets included in the “Monkland Village”:
Monkland Avenue, rue de l'Orphelinat, Coolbrooke Avenue, Earnscliffe Avenue, Girouard Avenue, Old Orchard Avenue, Marcil Avenue, Oxford Avenue, Harvard Avenue, Wilson Avenue, Melrose Avenue, Draper Avenue, Royal Avenue, Hampton Avenue, Hingston Avenue, Beaconsfield Avenue, Grand Boulevard

Bus routes passing through and around avenue Monkland:
17 Décarie, 24 Sherbrooke, 102 Somerled , 103 Monkland, 162 Westminster
